Cebu is an elongated island some 250 kilometers from North to South and 45 kilometers across at its widest point. It is central to the Philippine archipelago and some 600 kilometers south of Manila. The island's area of 5,000 square kilometers supports over 3.4 million people of whom over 1.7 million live in Metro Cebu. The east and west coasts are separated by a mountainous spine which rise to 1,000 meters. The climate is warm, generally 23 to 33° C. Rainfall is evenly distributed throughout the year. Beaches, coral atolls, islands and rich fishing grounds surround Cebu. Cebu's central location is proximity to unusually exotic tourist destinations. It is an access to a diversity of plants, animals and geological wonders within the island.

Cebu has an abundance of beauty. From the central mountains to the coral sands, the island is a natural wonder. Mountains streams cascade from misty heights to the sea. Colorful butterflies contrast with flocks of noisy birds. Some of the world's best scuba diving is located around Cebu's shore and there are regular sightings of dolphins and whales in the surrounding seas. The cool highlands are within 30 minutes drive from Metro Cebu. Rapid growth, abundant water and rich soils make a colorful exuberance. Birds come to roost, fragrances fill the air and the spirit is refreshed after each busy day.

The Chinese saw the value of Cebu as a trading post in around 900AD and the island's physical location made it the obvious place for the Spaniards to establish the Philippines first city. Cebu became the de facto capital of the Spanish colony. It's a central trading and shipping post status resulted in a remarkable range of cultures mixing, amicably with the Malays. A unique cosmopolitanculture evolved during the 400 years of Spanish rule and continued during 40 years of American influence.

People from

many countries live in Cebu and are well integrated with local population. The main religion is Roman Catholicism, while nearly every other religion is freely practice. Although pre-Spanish culture is still a way of life for some mountain villagers it is often woven into the cultures of other lands then expressed in song and dance extravaganzas such as the Sinulog festival. Such fiestas creatively mingle foreign influences with local folk lore. Relics of the past are found aplenty as Cebu is the country's oldest city. More than just a city of increasing sophistication, Cebu still retains much of its provincial warmth and charm, with its colorful past. Apart from Cebu's numerous man-made landmarks and institutions, it also features many miles of forest greens - a haven to wildlife and the place for a perfect picnic.

• Accommodation is not provided onsite at the TEFL Center in Cebu, Philippines however rooms and other accommodations can be arranged in several hotels, pension houses and also room accommodations for your convenience. All accommodations are clean, airconditioned, near malls, restaurants, shopping malls and banks. Accommodations are walking distance from the school. The mode of transporation in Cebu are jeepneys, taxis, and the rental of motorbike is also available.

The area is in a bustling business district of the city. A strategic location that gives you easy access to the places where you might need to go during your 4-week stay in the city. It is a 3-minute walk to and from Banilad Town Center, a mall with restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, and a grocery shop. The school is likewise accessible by taxi and by jeepney - the local public mass transportation.

Accommodation

Accommodation in Cebu will consist of a private air-conditioned room in an apartment 5-minute walk to the school or in a hotel or pension house of your choice, 15-minutes ride to the school. All rooms have a private bath and are clean, comfortable and adequately furnished. All rooms are also located within easy reach of various restaurants, bars and entertainment sites.  Bedding is provided. We also provide free, daily cleaning service during the course for all rooms, and laundry service is available at a nominal fee. You are more than welcome to invite friends or family members to stay in your room during the course - just please let us know as soon as possible. There is a minimal extra charge per additional person per room. Please be assured that any special requests or requirements regarding accommodation will be taken into account, and TEFL International will make every effort to oblige.
